Our
Story

We are "Lyons Unity The Church Unified in Christ" under the leadership of  Pastor Delwin E Benton!

This is the Lyons Unity Missionary Baptist Church, 3215 Lyons Avenue, Houston, Texas, was organized with 251 charter members at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, 1510 Pannell, the late Rev. L.H. Simpson, Pastor officiating.

This organization was conceived in the minds of these faithful and tireless members who met regularly in the home of late Bro. and Sis. Jack Perkins, 2920 Clementine Street. The name Lyons Unity was voted upon and accepted after it was submitted by Sis. Willie B. Hamilton and Bro. Frank Wallace. The motto Isaiah 40:31, was submitted by Bro. Leon Davis and accepted by the body.

March 1, 1964, they assembled and formed a line to march from the City of Houston Fire Station on Gregg Street to the renovated building (old cafeteria 3301 Lyons Avenue). Worship services were held in this building until April 17, 1966. The late Rev. Charles M. Oliver and the late Rev. Horace Anderson were appointed to conduct all services until a pastor could be called.

Rev. Oliver Carlton Johnson, Sr. accepted the call and became the first pastor on July 5, 1964. He, his wife, Faye Marie Johnson and their four children, Carletta, Andrea, Carla Faye, and Oliver C. Johnson, Jr, were warmly welcomed. After a while, they were all blessed with an additional family member, Orestes Christopher (Chris).

Plans were initiated to build a church edifice in September 1964.

On April 17, 1966, they marched into the new sanctuary. The procession of the grand march began at Gregg and New Orleans Streets. The sermon was brought by Rev, W, H, Banks, Pastor of Jordan Grove Missionary Baptist Church. In 1971 they purchased 1-1/4 acres of land to be used for a parking lot to be located behind the church building. This land included a business and rent houses. In 1972-1973 improvements were made inside the sanctuary. A shelter was added to connect the church building and the cafeteria.

The church continuously advanced forward under the leadership of our late pastor, Rev. O. C. Johnson Sr., who departed life on January 21, 2003, having served 39 years as our leader.

After the death of Rev. O. C. Johnson Sr., Rev William Jordan became pastor in July 2003 and left as pastor in July, 2021.

On April 23, 2022, Lyons Unity was blessed with Rev. Delwin E. Benton being elected as our new pastor. His beautiful wife, Richarria became our 1st Lady and his lovely children, son, Dylan, and daughter, Delaney all became our 1st Family.  We are under great spiritual leadership, under Pastor Benton, with great expectations of continued spiritual and financial growth filled with love and unity continuously led by God Almighty.
